Row, row, row your boat

It's Easter time again. The time of eating "monas" (typical pastry of the season), flying kites, dusting off skipping ropes, religious processions and yes, the long-awaited holidays. As we're enjoying a lovely mild weather, we've decided to make a quick trip to the Albufera. For many reasons, some of them will be revealed next, it's a plan we strongly recommend. It's good, beautiful and cheap and besides it's just a few minutes away from the city. What more could you ask for?

A brief word on the Albufera
Its name proceeds from the arab al-buhayra, that means "small sea", though some old poems refer to it as "mirror of the sea". It stretches over more than 20 hectares and it comprises the towns of Valencia, Alfafar, Sedaví, Massanassa, Catarroja, Albal, Beniparell, Silla, Sollana, Sueca, Cullera, Albalat de la Ribera and Algemesí.
Back in 1986 it was declared Natural Park. Thus it became one of the twenty-two Natural Parks existing in the Comunidad Valenciana. Three years later, in 1989, it was catalogued in the list of "Wetlands of international importance".
Its biodiversity, its fauna and flora, as well as its typical gastronomy, make the Albufera an excellent excuse for leaving the city and take a "natural" breather.

How to spend a morning in the Natural Park
Because it's so close, we're heading for the district of El Palmar. There are several options to get here from the city: by car, by bus and even by bike! There is a cycle path connected to the old riverbed which prolonges south past the district of Pinedo as far as the Dehesa del Saler (a Mediterranean pine forest), where it ends.
Our plan is simple. We'll lay on the beach for a while surrounded by wondrous sand dunes; later we'll eat an "arròs a banda" (a rice cooked with fish broth and seafood served with "allioli", a typical sauce made of oil and garlic) at the restaurant of the Cofradía de Pescadores (the Fishermen's Guild) and after it we'll take a boat trip around the lake. And should we make it to the end of the day, may the force be with us, we'll stay to watch the sun go down in a spot of outstanding beauty.
